What is a Conversation Exchange?

Well, the best way to explain it is through an example.
Pedro is from Spain and has recently moved to New York. His English is a bit patchy and he would like to improve it. John is from New York and he is learning Spanish, but he never has the opportunity to listen and speak to native Spanish speakers. Now, John and Pedro could help each other out. For example they can meet up in a café once a week and have a conversation exchange, speaking half an hour in English and half an hour in Spanish.
There is no cost or homework involved and you learn the language in a social environment. Furthermore, you are more likely to learn slang and other things about a culture that you do not usually learn in a formal language class.

 

How can I have a Conversation Exchange?

In order to have a conversation exchange, you need to do the following:

  1. Exchange messages through the web site with members who live in your town
  2. When you feel comfortable to do so, arrange to meet with one of them in a public place

This is of course possible if there are members in your area who are learning your native language and who speak the language you're learning. If there are no matches in your area you can search for a chat partner

 

How do I contact a member?

To be able to contact your partner, first you need to register with us. This is necessary for the whole process to work. You can then search our database, and if you successfully find an ideal exchange partner, you contact them via our web site and your e-mail address is never disclosed. All messages users receive are from "conversationexchange.com". You don't need to disclose any personal information in your message and you can settle on a convenient time and location for a first meeting only when you feel comfortable to do so. We generally recommend users to exchange several messages through the web site before meeting.

 

Penpal. How does it work?

First of all you need to search our database for someone who wants to learn your language and whose native language is the language you want to practice. Then you can send each other messages through our web site. To be able to send a message you need to sign up, which is completely free. You can start a correspondence exchange with more than one partner and create your own contacts list. This kind of correspondence exchange is also the perfect way to get acquainted to someone you want to have a conversation exchange with.

I can't login, what is wrong?

This can be for the following reasons:

  1. You have entered the wrong email address. This could happen when you have more than one email address and you're not sure which one you're using for ConversationExchange.com
  2. You have not entered your full email address. For example, if your email address is [email protected], you might have typed [email protected]
  3. You have not entered the password in the correct case. The password "IMGREAT" is different from "imgreat"
  4. You forgot your password, in which case you can request a new one

 

How do I change my password, email address or profile?

To change any of the above details, please do as follows:

  1. Log in
  2. Click on "My Account"
  3. Choose the appropriate option

 

Can anyone see my email address?

No. Your email address is not published on our web site and it is never disclosed to third parties. When you send a message to a potential exchange partner, they will receive an email from "conversationexchange.com". Exchange of messages and any information is always done via our web site. The only way for other people to see your email address is if you type it in one of your messages. We recommend that you never disclose personal information in any of your messages, unless you feel comfortable to do so.
We don't send any news letters or promotional information from third parties. If we implement a newsletter feature in the future, then your account will be set, by default, to not receive it.

 

Can you send the validation email again?

If you haven't received the validation email when you signed up (or changed your email address) check this:

    - If you have gmail.com please check your Social tab in your Inbox folder or your All Mail folder.

    - If you have hotmail.com, msn.com, outlook.com, live.com:

      1. log to your email web site
      2. click the gear on the top right and click options
      3. click Safe and blocked senders -> safe senders
      4. in the left box type conversationexchange.com and click Add to list >>
      5. Request a new validation email

    - If you have another provider or still do not find our email then you probably need to check your spam folder or adjust your spam filter to receive email from us. Please follow these steps:

  1. Add the following two email addresses to your contacts or safe list, to be sure to be able to receive emails from us:

If the above doesn't work, the only other option is to change your registered email address. To do so:

  1. Login using your current email and password
  2. Click on the "change your registered email address" link that you'll find at the end of the error message

 

Can I deactivate my profile?

Yes. When deactivated, your profile is not searchable and other members cannot contact you, except for your contacts and members who are replying to your messages. To deactivate your profile do as follows:

  1. Click on "My account -> Profile"
  2. Click on "Deactivate profile"

You can reactivate your profile at any time.

 

How can I display newly registered users?

When you perform a search, by default users are sorted by "Last login date", in other words users who have logged in more recently come up on top. However, if you wish to view newly registered users first, do as follows:

  1. Log in
  2. Click on Advanced Search
  3. At the bottom of the search box select "Sort results by Profile date"

 

How do I place an ad for a language partner?

When you search for a language partner, what you get are not exactly ads but members' profiles. By signing up, your profile is automatically published. If you wish to unpublish your profile at a later date, all you need to do is to deactivate your profile or delete your account.

 

How can I tell who's online?

At the moment we don't have a built-in chat system so you cannot see who is online. If you wish to chat with a ConversationExchange member, please follow these instructions.

 

Do you practice link exchange?

No. Please don’t contact us requesting a link exchange.
